DIY Scrap Fabric Ornaments

Transform your leftover fabric scraps into stunning, one-of-a-kind ornaments! This project is quick, easy, and budget-friendly.

Supplies Needed:

  • Clear plastic ornaments (any size or shape)

  • Mod Podge (Matte or Glossy finish)

  • Paintbrush (small or medium-sized)

  • Fabric scraps (cut into small pieces, about 1–2 inches)

  • Scissors

  • Glitter (optional)

  • Ribbon or twine (for hanging)

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

Start by gathering all your materials. Choose a variety of fabric scraps with different patterns and colors for a vibrant, patchwork look. If your fabric scraps are wrinkled, you may want to iron them beforehand for easier application.

Step 2: Prepare Your Ornaments

Remove any hooks or caps from the top of the plastic ornaments. If they’re dusty, wipe them clean with a damp cloth to ensure the Mod Podge adheres properly.

Step 3: Cut Your Fabric Scraps

Using scissors, cut your fabric scraps into small, irregular shapes. Don’t worry about perfection—these shapes will overlap, creating a unique design. Pieces about 1–2 inches in size work well, but you can adjust depending on the size of your ornament.

Step 4: Apply Mod Podge

Using a paintbrush, apply a thin layer of Mod Podge directly onto a small section of the ornament. Work in small areas to prevent the Mod Podge from drying out too quickly.

Step 5: Attach Fabric Pieces

Press a fabric piece onto the Mod Podge-coated area, smoothing it out to remove wrinkles or bubbles. Continue applying Mod Podge and adding fabric pieces, overlapping them slightly to cover the entire surface of the ornament.

Tip: Use your fingers or the paintbrush to press down edges and ensure each piece adheres fully.

Step 6: Seal the Ornament

Once the entire ornament is covered with fabric, apply a thin top coat of Mod Podge over the fabric to seal it. Allow it to dry completely (about 30 minutes to an hour).

Step 7: Add Glitter (Optional)

For a sparkly finish, sprinkle a light layer of glitter onto the ornament while the top coat of Mod Podge is still wet. Alternatively, wait until the ornament is dry and apply another thin layer of Mod Podge before sprinkling the glitter.

Step 8: Add Ribbon or Twine

Once the ornament is fully dry, reattach the cap or hook. Cut a piece of ribbon or twine, loop it through the ornament’s top, and tie a knot to create a hanger.

Step 9: Display or Gift Your Ornaments

Your handmade scrap fabric ornaments are ready to adorn your tree, wreath, or holiday displays! These also make thoughtful, personal gifts for friends and family.

Tips for Success:

  • Experiment with different fabric colors and patterns for a cohesive holiday theme (reds and greens for Christmas, blues and silvers for winter, etc.).

  • For a polished finish, use glitter that matches or complements your fabric colors.

  • Work on wax paper or a disposable table cover to prevent Mod Podge messes.
